The Importance of Using a Miter Gauge
For your home workshop or building business, it is almost essential that you have a miter gauge to use along with machines such as table saws, routers, and band saws. These gauges are almost always included in most of the newer cutting machines. However, in some of the older cutting machines they may not be present, or you may have to replace this gauge on one of your cutting machines if it is worn. Many crafters and builders believe that most of the miter gauges that come with new table saws are usually not sufficient, and they almost immediately replace them with more durable gauges that can perform more complicated tasks.
Your table saw is almost always the most used machine in your workshop if you do home repairs, build custom furniture, or do other woodworking projects. Projects usually always start with the table saw, so you want to make sure that you have a good gauge to use with your table saw so that you can make miter joints that are of the best quality. Miter joints are extremely important when it comes to building or remodeling, and a miter joint that is done improperly can compromise the quality and structural integrity of any woodworking project. Especially when it comes to home additions or home remodeling, you need miter joints that are secure and sound, or you may find that your completed project will not hold up, or worse yet, that it may be dangerous. The cut of the miter joint is of the utmost importance - the two boards need to fit together almost like they are one piece. For this, you need a good quality gauge so that you can hopefully do the job right the first time, and not waste precious wood and equally precious time.
The reason that using a good quality miter gauge is so important is that it will set and hold the correct miter angle so that your cuts will come out clean and your miter joint will be as close to perfect as possible. A gauge that is old, worn, or that slips is just as bad as not using one at all, so each and every time you are going to produce a miter joint you have to test the gauge first. A few simple testing procedures should be all it takes to see if your gauge is going to work properly. Also, if you are going to buy a gauge, you want to make sure that it adheres to certain standards before you make your purchase. The gauge should come square right out of the box - you should not have to do this yourself. It should be properly calibrated at the factory, and it should be able to work with both acute and obtuse angles. You should also consider purchasing fence extensions for your gauge so that you can be sure that you'll be able to do all kinds of woodworking tasks.
If you are new to creating miter joints, or have never done them before, you might want to have someone show you who is more of an expert at this task. You may even want to take this expert with you when you are purchasing a gauge so that you will know that you are buying one that is sufficient. Learning how to produce quality miter joints may take a little trial and error, but with the right tutoring and the right gauge, you should be able to do quality work in very little time. Remember, however, that even if you know you've bought the best possible gauge for producing miter joints, you will still need to test your gauge periodically to make sure that it has not become too old or worn. With a good quality gauge, you should be able to produce a numerous amount of miter joints before your gauge needs to be replaced.
